TOWN OF FREEPORT
Recycling/Solid Waste Committee Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the Meeting Held January 16, 2008

Present: Marjorie Hall, Paul Kane, Louise Haggett, Jeff Stenzel, Mary File
Staff: Al Presgraves
Guests: None
1. Approval of minutes of the December 19, 2007 Committee Meeting
The minutes were unanimously approved.

2. Solid Waste & Recycling Director’s Report
Al brought statistics demonstrating the increase in material sales. He feels the addition of mixed paper, newspaper and office paper, since July, has brought additional revenue. This also reflects a decrease in silver bullet collection at the recycling center.

3. Old Business
a. The old recycling video has been found. The new video is still being considered and more information will be available in the near future.
b. There is still concern regarding the northerly South Freeport sign for the silver bullet, and the feeling it directs people to an area by the post office instead of the true location. Al has checked into this, but will see about mentioning it again.
c. The cardboard recycling notice went to the Freeport Merchants Association (FMA), and the link to the Freeport Recycling Website was noted. Al checked with the assessor’s office and will be able to get the requested business listings in Freeport. Al will send postcards to the businesses to make them aware of the ordinance for the recycling of cardboard.
d. Louise will continue with “RecyclingTips” for the Notes while she is away this winter. Her efforts are appreciated.

4. New Business
The issue regarding the pick-up of “returnables”, and the return of the committee built container to the West Street site was discussed. The committee wishes to thank the Freeport Community Center for helping to promote recycling for the past few years by managing the “returnables” at West Street.

5. Other Business
a. The committee accepted Jane Kidder’s resignation, and thanks her for her time.
b. The committee moved to reduce the number of committee members to 5 instead of 7.
c. Al announced the DEP will offer $5.00 coupons for the return of mercury thermometers.
d. Discussion re: incentive ideas to increase usuage at the recycling center will need further consideration.

6. Public Comment
7. Adjourn Motion was made to adjourn. The next meeting will be February 13, 2008
6:30 PM at the Freeport Community Center.

Respectfully Submitted,
Mary H. File
